SAP People Intelligence Assistant: A Guide to SAP's New People Analytics AI Agents

It would not be hyperbole to say that SAP People Intelligence is radically changing how SAP customers (in general) and SAP SuccessFactors customers (in particular) do People Analytics.

At time of writing (Oct 2026), this is currently by moving users from traditional dashboard reporting to what we call "Chat-Based People Analytics" - the  mode of People Analytics where users can type in basic workforce questions and queries and can immediately expect answers in a conversational chat environment.

However, the more notable shift that will happen over the next few months is the arrival of fully autonomous People Analytics AI Agents that will be able to monitor, explain and solve workforce issues - with minimal (or no) human intervention.

Instead of waiting for an HR leader to open a dashboard, identify a problem and start investigating it, the new SAP People Intelligence Assistant is designed to continuously monitor workforce data, identify meaningful changes, explain what is happening and recommend what leaders should do next.

It is part of SAP's wider move towards Autonomous HR - bringing together its HCM applications, workforce data, Joule Assistants and specialised AI Agents to make HR processes increasingly proactive.

For People Analytics and HRISteams, this is a significant development.

Planning for People Analytics AI Agents?

Before you implement an Agent, you need to define what it should monitor, when it should alert HR, what data and metrics it needs - and what it should be allowed to do next.

3n Strategy's People Analytics AI Agent Service helps you design your first Agent use case and assess whether your People Analytics foundations are ready to support it.

But understanding it requires understanding the difference between the People Intelligence Assistant and the individual People Intelligence Agents working behind it.

More importantly, organisations need to consider whether their People Analytics is actually ready for an AI Agent to start monitoring it.

What is the SAP People Intelligence Assistant?

The SAP People Intelligence Assistant turns workforce data into proactive, actionable insight.

It is designed to continuously monitor workforce KPIs across areas including:

  • Headcount
  • Attrition
  • Hiring
  • Skills
  • Workforce cost

Rather than simply displaying those metrics, the Assistant can detect meaningful shifts, investigate what may be driving them and provide recommendations appropriate to the person receiving the insight.

Potential use cases include workforce insights and reporting, headcount planning, skills gap analysis and attrition and retention forecasting.

The important difference is proactivity.

Traditional People Analytics relies heavily on someone knowing that there is a question to ask.

The People Intelligence Assistant introduces the possibility that AI can identify the question first.

As of October 2026, the People Intelligence Assistant is on the SAP roadmap and is not yet Generally Available. Current plans indicate an expected release in November 2026, although SAP roadmap timing and scope can change.

Is the People Intelligence Assistant the same as the People Intelligence Agent?

No.

This distinction is important because Assistant and Agent have different roles within SAP's Autonomous HCM architecture.

The People Intelligence Assistant is the coordinating layer.

It orchestrates specialised AI Agents capable of performing different parts of the People Intelligence process.

For People Intelligence, there are currently three key Agents to understand.

People Intelligence Agent

The People Intelligence Agent monitors workforce signals and identifies where attention may be required.

It can monitor workforce KPIs across different segments, identify deviations from defined thresholds and surface emerging workforce issues.

Its role is fundamentally about recognising that something has happened that may require attention.

Analytic Reasoning Agent

The Analytic Reasoning Agent helps investigate why something is happening.

It performs correlation analysis across different dimensions and provides natural-language explanations of the factors associated with a workforce trend or change.

If the People Intelligence Agent identifies an unusual increase in attrition, for example, analytical reasoning can help investigate where the increase is occurring and which factors appear to be associated with it.

People Intelligence Recommendations Agent

The People Intelligence Recommendations Agent helps determine what to do next.

It generates prescriptive, persona-aware recommendations, including for scenarios such as reducing regrettable attrition.

This potentially moves the People Analytics experience beyond identifying and explaining a workforce problem towards helping the organisation respond to it.

At 3n Strategy, we think there is a simple way to understand these three Agents:

MONITOR → EXPLAIN → SOLVE

People Intelligence Agent → MONITOR

Something significant appears to be happening in the workforce.

Analytic Reasoning Agent → EXPLAIN

Why is it happening? Which populations, dimensions or factors appear to be associated with the change?

People Intelligence Recommendations Agent → SOLVE

What could the organisation consider doing about it?

This is 3n Strategy's simplification rather than SAP terminology, but it demonstrates why People Intelligence Agents represent such an interesting development for People Analytics.

Traditional People Analytics normally begins with a human.

Someone asks:

"Why has regrettable attrition increased?"

An analyst, dashboard or AI interface then attempts to answer the question.

Agentic People Analytics potentially reverses that relationship.

The technology can identify that there is a question worth asking in the first place.

From dashboards to proactive People Analytics

Imagine regrettable attrition begins increasing among a strategically important population.

Today, someone may eventually notice the increase on a dashboard.

They might then ask People Analytics to investigate it.

An analyst could examine the affected population, compare it with historical trends and investigate variables such as tenure, location, management structure, compensation or other relevant dimensions.

The resulting insight might eventually reach the HRBP or business leader who can do something about it.

The People Intelligence Assistant is designed to compress that process.

It can continuously monitor workforce KPIs and identify when something moves beyond a defined threshold.

From there:

MONITOR: Regrettable attrition has changed significantly.

EXPLAIN: Here are the populations and factors associated with that change.

SOLVE: Here are potential actions to consider.

That could considerably shorten the distance between workforce change and workforce decision.

But it creates a new problem.

Who decides what your People Intelligence Agent should care about?

This is where implementing People Intelligence Agents becomes more than a technology project.

Consider the phrase "meaningful shift."

What exactly does meaningful mean?

Suppose attrition increases by 2%.

Should the Agent alert somebody?

Maybe.

Maybe not.

A 2% movement across your entire workforce could mean something very different from the same movement among employees occupying a small number of strategically critical roles.

The Agent therefore needs more than access to a metric.

The organisation needs to determine the circumstances under which changes to that metric actually matter.

Then there is the question of who needs to know.

Should an emerging attrition issue be surfaced to the CHRO? The relevant HRBP? A business leader? Talent? People Analytics?

And what should that person receive?

A simple notification? An explanation of what has changed? The underlying evidence? A recommended intervention? Potential actions that the Agent could initiate?

These aren't simply questions about configuring AI.

They are People Analytics AI design questions.

Before the Agent can monitor, you need to define what matters

This creates a new requirement for organisations considering SAP People Intelligence Agents.

You need to translate your workforce priorities and People Analytics into something an AI Agent can continuously evaluate.

For every potential Agent use case, there are questions to answer:

  • What workforce question should the Agent monitor?
  • Which metrics does it require?
  • Which populations should it analyse?
  • What constitutes a meaningful change?
  • When should a change generate an alert?
  • Who should receive that alert?
  • What information should they receive?
  • How frequently should the Agent intervene?
  • What should the Agent be allowed to recommend?
  • What should it potentially be allowed to do next?
  • Where must human judgement remain in control?
  • How will you determine whether the Agent is improving decisions?

These decisions effectively become the business specification for your People Analytics AI Agent.

And that specification needs to exist alongside the technology.

How you can prepare for SAP People Intelligence Agents

If you're already using SAP SuccessFactors, the arrival of the People Intelligence Assistant shouldn't simply trigger the question:

"How do we turn it on?"

There are more important questions to answer first.

  • What do we actually want our People Intelligence Agents to monitor?

  • What questions sit behind those decisions?

  • Do we have the metrics and data required to answer them?

  • What constitutes a meaningful change?

  • When should an Agent interrupt someone?

  • Who should it tell?

  • What should it tell them?

  • What should it recommend?

  • What should it be allowed to do next?

  • And where should human judgement remain in control?

These conversations can start before the People Intelligence Assistant is generally available.

In fact, there is a strong argument that they should.

Because implementing the technology and deciding what you want the technology to do are two different things.
